FADE IN
EXT-LOS ANGELES, CAL., USA
[We see an aerial shot of the Los Angeles office of the Department of Homeland Security]
DHS MAN: This is a very impressive resume, Mr Carter.
INT-DEPARTMENT OF HOMELAND SECURITY
[Carter is in a job interview]
DHS MAN C'TND: You've had a long career in law enforcement.
CARTER: There's never been anything else I've wanted to do.
DHS MAN: Experience matters to us at the Department of Homeland Security. Now, for the last two years you've been in small community policing. I grew up in a small town myself, anything exciting ever happen?
[We see various scenes from past episodes: Carter riding the drone from 'Bad to the Drone', Lupo knocking over the frozen scientist in 'Unpredictable', robo-pooch exploding in 'Best in Faux', Allison driving Carter across a seemingly broken bridge in 'Pilot', Carter shooting the nano dog in 'Primal' and finally exploding Café Diem in 'Maneater']
CARTER: Just your normal small town stuff.
EXT-EUREKA MAIN STREET
[Carter and Henry are walking together]
HENRY: So, how did the meeting go?
CARTER: It's a little weird interviewing for a new job when you can't actually talk about your old job.
HENRY: The Government has to protect its secrets, you know, and you've seen a lot since you've come to Eureka.
CARTER: Oh, you can tell me about it. Compared to this, Homeland Security is going to be dull.
HENRY: Jack, forgive me but I'm actually hoping you don't get the job.
[They stop outside Café Diem. Carter smiles, not offended in the slightest]
HENRY C'TND: I gotta go.
CARTER: Sure, anything I can help you with?
HENRY: Well, I'm trying to nail down a radio diffraction grading. The EHF antenna array is-- still getting crackles. What do ya think?
[Henry holds up his small notebook to Carter, who pretends to look for a few seconds and then simply pats him on the shoulders]
CARTER: Good luck with that. Yeah!
[Henry leaves]
INT-CAFÉ DIEM - CONTINUOUS
[Zoe is bringing a melon medley to a customer but stops short when she spots Carter who has just walked in]
ZOE: Hey!
CARTER: Hi...
ZOE: Did they offer you the job?
CARTER: Well, they told me they'd let me know.
ZOE: But when? When will they let you know? I mean, will we have to move right away or...?
[Zoe is deadly serious but Carter tries to laugh it off]
CARTER: I don't know. But no more Vincepresso for you, okay?
ZOE: Wow. My life is in complete turmoil and you think it's hilarious?
[Carter: serious face]
CARTER: No. I don't. I mean, in fact, I told them I can't start until you've finished the semester.
[She nods, relieved]
CARTER C'TND: Gonna make this as easy on you as I can.
ZOE: Okay.
[Vincent arrives at his side of the counter]
CARTER: Vince! Can I get a burger?
VINCENT: Simple meal for a simple man.
[Vincent is clearly quite upset -- Zoe isn't impressed]
VINCENT C'TND: It's not going to be the same without you, Sheriff.
ZOE: Vince, can you try and hold it together for just like... one second... please.
[Vincent nods at Carter and backs away, as Zoe rounds Carter to deliver the plate to her customer]
CARTER: Thanks Vince.
[Carter turns and walks towards Jo Lupo, who is sitting at a table]
CARTER: Wow, a coffee and a donut. You're already eating like a Sheriff!
JO: It's a 16-grain protein bagel and I am not Sheriff.
CARTER: Alright, "acting Sheriff" just 'til the D.o.D. makes it official. You happy?
JO: Carter, you know I've always wanted your job.
[Carter rolls his eyes up in a "well, yeahhh" kind of expression]
JO C'TND: And I deserve it. And I'll probably do it better than you did.
CARTER: Yeah. You will.
JO: I want it. But not like this.
CATER: I know. I'm proud of you anyway.
[She laughs, just as a pregnant Allison arrives over Carter's shoulder with a very noticeable bump and Vincent delivers Carter's burger and fries]
ALLISON: Hey!
CARTER: Hey--look at you!
ALLISON: Yeah, it's hard not to. I'm starting to create my own gravitational field.
CARTER: Yeah, well, it agrees with you. Being pregnant.
ALLISON: Actually, I needed to see the both of you. I have news about the Sheriff's position.
JO: General Mansfield came around and he's gonna re-hire Carter?
ALLISON: No...
[Carter and Jo start making assumptions...]
CARTER: Congratulations...Sheriff Lupo.
[Jo is very happy]
ALLISON: Anddd, it's not Jo either.
[That didn't last long]
ALLISON C'TND: Sorry. They have hired a replacement - he will be here any minute.
[Disappointment all around]
INT-SHERIFF'S OFFICE
[Carter, Allison and Jo stand staring at something in the office. Turns out to be a silver case sitting on the desk]
CARTER: So I guess he sent his stuff ahead?
JO: And he's late on his first day.
ALLISON: Well, they gave me his phone number. Let me give him a call.
[She takes out her phone and attempts to call him. The phone begins ringing inside the case]
JO: He sent his cell phone ahead?
[Jo looks confused by this action. Carter moves in to investigate. He opens the case to find a compacted robot]
ROBOT: Hello Dr. Blake. Deputy Lupo. And you must be--
[Carter slams the case shut]
CARTER: That's very creepy.
[Fargo appears]
FARGO: That is the latest in dynamic copolymers.
CARTER: Aww, is this one of your freaky inventions?
FARGO: No. This is a 2.9 billion dollar D.o.D. program. I'll have him on duty in two shakes of an artificial lamb's tail.
CARTER: On duty?
[Jo begins removing her badge]
ALLISON: Fargo, are you saying that the new Sheriff of Eureka is a robot!?
FARGO: The biggest advance in soft robotics since the Furby. Look, you can't expect just any anthropomorph to replace Sheriff Jack Carter.
JO: That's it!
[Jo hands Allison her badge]
JO C'TND: Passed over again, I don't think so.
CARTER: Come on, Jo!
JO: I quit! I am not working for that...thing!
CARTER: Jo!
[Jo storms out. Fargo then proceeds to open the chest, step back and push a button. The robot unpacks itself into the shape of a human figure, steps forward (to the amazement of Carter) and then the metallic shell collapses away to reveal a human figure in the Sheriff's outfit]
SHERIFF ANDY: You can call me Sheriff Andy.
[Carter nods. Fargo is delighted]
FARGO: Hi, Sheriff Andy!!

CREDITS
INT-GLOBAL DYNAMICS
[Allison and General Mansfield walk into the rotunda]
ALLISON: Eureka can't have an experiment in charge of law enforcement.
MANSFIELD: You needed a Sheriff and the prototype was ready, or would you prefer to leave the position vacant?
ALLISON: I would prefer re-hiring Carter.
MANSFIELD: Sheriff Andy is programmed with the latest protocols in criminal investigation. He's designed to be ahead of the problem...unlike Carter.
ALLISON: Look, I know Carter has a unique investigative style but his record speaks for itself.
MANSFIELD: Yes, it does. Doctor Blake, you are now the sole head of Global Dynamics - your plate is full. Don't waste your time worrying about Carter.
[Mansfield leaves her]
INT-SARAH
[Carter enters the house]
SARAH: Good evening, Sheriff.
CARTER: Yeahh, not so much.
[He stops when he spots Lexi with a device levitating a doll. There is another man also in the room]
CARTER: What's this?
SARAH: Ask your sister.
CARTER: Oh, why doesn't that surprise me! Lex..!
LEXI: Oh, come on Jack, look - it's so cool.
CARTER: What-- lemme guess, err, baby aquarium?
LEXI: No, it's a tensor field generator. It creates sort of a zero gravity bubble and it's totally portable and easy to use.
[Carter snickers]
LEXI C'TND: For my home birth. Dr Fielding says this way when my babies are born, they'll just sort of drift - totally weightless.
FIELDING: Not weightless, Lexi. The tensor field repulses most of the gravitons but the subject retains point zero zero nine six percent of its original weight.
LEXI: Weightless enough for me. I've gained ten pounds in the last day.
CARTER: Ten pounds!?
LEXI: Shut up. You try making two whole people.
CARTER: Fair enough.
FIELDING: Er, I'll, er, come back for the generator at a er...at a better time.
CARTER: Dr. Fielding. Was nice to see you again.
[Carter offers out his hand, which Fielding takes merely out of politeness]
FIELDING: Pleasure.
[Fielding leaves the house. Lexi looks bemused]
CARTER: Had to cite him for overloading the power grid a little while back.
LEXI: Try to be nice, trying to get twin discount.
CARTER: Lex, are you sure you should be planning all this stuff? I mean, we're not even gonna be here when the babies are born.
LEXI: Stop it, you're not going anywhere.
SARAH: Excuse me, Sheriff, I'm monitoring a bulletin on the public safety network. Numerous fallen trees have blocked the road.
CARTER: Ohh, you can get Sheriff in a box to handle that one.
[Carter doesn't seem to care]
SARAH: Doctor Blake was involved.
[Now he does]
EXT-ROAD
[Carter arrives on scene. There are numerous vehicles scattered across the road. As Carter jumps out of the car, he spots Allison]
CARTER: Allison!
[Mansfield watches as he runs over to her]
CARTER C'TND: You okay?
ALLISON: Yeah, erm, I'm fine. The roads just blocked, we're trying to get a crew out here.
[Mansfield comes across]
MANSFIELD: Mr. Carter. I believe public safety is no longer under your jurisdiction.
CARTER: Yeah, I'm just out making sure everybody's okay.
MANSFIELD: 'preciate your concern. Sheriff Andy has been notified, clearly everything's fine.
[At that precise moment we hear a crack from behind Carter and Allison, to which they react]
WORKER: Look out!
[Another tree collapses onto and crushes a parked car. We hear the Sheriff's siren nearing]
CARTER: Alright, everybody--
[Sheriff Andy arrives]
CARTER C'TND: Everybody get away from the treeline! Come on back.
[Sheriff Andy comes across]
SHERIFF ANDY: How are you tonight? Evening folks. Seems you found yourselves a bit of excitement, huh?
MANSFIELD: Welcome to Eureka, Sheriff Andy.
SHERIFF ANDY: Thank you kindly, sir. Mr Carter, we didn't get a chance to talk when you were unpacking me.
[Sheriff Andy offers out his hand to Carter]
CARTER: Yeah I know, there's time for chit-chat later. Right now we gotta stop the traffic--
SHERIFF ANDY: Done. I've dispatched a couple of roadblock drones, they should be on station--
[We hear a droning sound coming from above. The drones fly over]
SHERIFF ANDY C'TND: Ahh, there they are.
CARTER: Er, we also gotta get a medical team.
SHERIFF ANDY: Don't you worry about it, I've got it covered.
[Sheriff Andy looks past Carter and Allison at the workers and we see scans of their skeleton and hearts]
SHERIFF ANDY C'TND: I've got a complete suite of medical diagnostic tools. Just some fraid nerves, is all. Er, excuse me, Doctor Blake - your baby is A.O.K. Amniotic fluid levels, pulse, ox, all perfectly normal. Pregnancy is such a miracle, don't you think?
CARTER: [laughs] Yeah.
MANSFIELD: Seems like Sheriff Andy has everything under control.
SHERIFF ANDY: I sure do, but thank you so much for your assist. Now, if you'll excuse me.
[Sheriff Andy walks across to the crushed car where everyone has gathered around]
SHERIFF ANDY C'TND: Alright people, move away from the treeline.
MANSFIELD: Doctor Blake, I'm sure you want to observe your new Sheriff in action.
[Mansfield walks away and Allison, after a brief pause, follows]
SHERIFF ANDY: Alright people, move to the side of the road away from the treeline.
[Carter is left to think to himself]
CARTER: I guess I'll get out of the way.
INT-CAFÉ DIEM
[Carter is polishing off a milkshake]
CARTER: Hit me, Vince.
VINCENT: Are you sure, Sheriff--Jack--Mr Carter?
CARTER: Yeah!
[Allison walks in and joins Carter as Vincent pours another shake into his glass]
CARTER: Thanks. [to Allison] Hey.
ALLISON: You're not going to find what you're looking for at the bottom of that glass.
CARTER: Well, what if I'm looking for a banana milkshake?
ALLISON: Well then you're good.
CARTER: So. What do you think brought those trees down?
ALLISON: So far, looks like an accident.
CARTER: Really? Is that what the new Sheriff told you?
ALLISON: It's his preliminary findings. And he's not my new anything. You can't be replaced by six feet of nano polymer with a nice smile.
[A brief pause as Carter switches to serious mode]
CARTER: So. Erm...the DHS called. They offered me the job.
ALLISON: Oh... Well, that's, er, good news.
CARTER: Yeah, yeah, they need me to start right away. Just, er, few days.
ALLISON: Oh, well, you should be packing, what are you doing here?
[They both laugh]
CARTER: Hiding from my daughter.
INT-SARAH
[Zoe is storming down the stairs, Carter hot on her heels]
ZOE: This officially sucks. You told me we wouldn't have to leave until after the semester, you promised!
CARTER: Yeah, and I know the timing's crappy but this is the right job for me.
ZOE: You already have the right job.
CARTER: I know, and they hired someone else.
ZOE: So, they bring in robocop and I have to leave my friends and my boyfriend in two days. How is that fair?
[The doorbell rings]
SARAH: Speaking of robocop. There's someone at the door.
[The door opens without command and in steps Sheriff Andy]
SHERIFF ANDY: Hey there. Gee, I hope I didn't catch ya at a bad time.
[Zoe's body language reads: erm, yes, you pain in the butt]
SHERIFF ANDY C'TND: You must be Zoe, hello!
[He offers her his hand]
ZOE: Bite me, Terminator.
CARTER: We're...kinda in the middle here.
SHERIFF ANDY: Well, I'll be quick. I'm doing an office inventory and I need your uniform. It's strictly for paperwork.
[They nod at each other]
CARTER: Sure.
[Carter heads into the wardrobe to collect the uniform]
SHERIFF ANDY: Nice place.
[Carter returns and hands the uniform to Sheriff Andy]
SHERIFF ANDY C'TND: Thank you. I'll get out of your way.
[Sheriff Andy heads towards the door]
CARTER: Hey, Andy!
[Sheriff Andy stops and looks back]
CARTER C'TND: Question, erm... Do you think those trees came down by accident?
SHERIFF ANDY: Yes sir, the impact pattern seems perfectly natural.
CARTER: Yes. Yes, but trees don't just fall down by themselves.
[Sheriff Andy laughs and Carter smiles]
SHERIFF ANDY: Actually, Jack--
CARTER: I mean, in Eureka. In Eureka, when a tree falls in the forest, it's not just a tree.
[Sheriff Andy considers Carter's comments for a brief moment]
SHERIFF ANDY: I am confident in the results of my investigation. But thank you so much for your advice.
[Sheriff Andy pats Carter on the shoulder and leaves]
CARTER: What do you think, SARAH?
SARAH: I believe this saccharin Sheriff act is getting quite tiresome.
CARTER: I mean, is it natural for a dozen trees to come down all by themselves. I mean, were the roots rotting, were...
SARAH: My analysis of the wood samples does indicate genetic abnormalities.
CARTER: How'd you get wood samples?
SARAH: The artificial Sheriff had debris on his shoes.
[A holographic footprint appears on the carpet and then breaks down into analysis like on a computer screen...right there on the carpet]
SARAH C'TND: He tracked it on my carpet.
CARTER: Thank you.
EXT-MAIN STREET
[Allison has just got out of her car as Carter comes up to her]
CARTER: Allison, hey, erm... I need a tree guy...
ALLISON: Excuse me?
CARTER: I need someone who studies erm... tree genes. Does anyone actually study that?
ALLISON: Yeah, of course there's someone, a dendrological geneticist.
CARTER: Great, need one of those.
ALLISON: Carter, your security clearance has been revoked; I can't talk to you about GD personnel.
CARTER: We can't just forget about it just because the tin man says it was an accident.
ALLISON: Yes, and just because he's a robot doesn't mean that he's wrong.
CARTER: But he's been here for a half a day. I mean, it takes a lot longer than that to understand this town. And... and we got lucky. I bet that if more trees fall down, somebody could get killed.
[Allison understands Carter's point. It's clear she wants to help him]
ALLISON: I can't! I can't tell you that Doctor Leonardo is the top GD dendrologist and that she's working on increasing xynol nutrient transport. She has a lab over on South Goddard. I would be breaking about thirty-five federal laws. If I told you that. Excuse me.
[She rolls her eyes up as she walks away. Carter smiles, and then turns to say thank you but doesn't]
EXT-LEONARDO WORKSITE
[Doctor Leonardo is busy planting a small tree as Carter and Lupo arrive]
CARTER: Yeah, I can't get anything to grow. I got a total black thumb.
JO: I'm guessing she doesn't have that problem.
LEONARDO: Err, not so much.
CARTER: So, erm, do you make anything out here that might make trees fall down?
LEONARDO: Erm, no, quite the opposite. We study geometrically increased angiosperm reproduction.
[Brief pause as Carter turns away to think to himself - "huh?"]
CARTER: Huh. So, what's that?
[He gets his answer as he turns back to face Leonardo and is instead stood next to a huge tree that has grown where Leonardo was planting the small tree. Leonardo is quite please]
LEONARDO: Accelerated tree grow.
[Jo and Carter pause to admire the work]
JO: You're making some progress.
LEONARDO: Ahha.
CARTER: Yeah, erm, we were wondering if you could take a look at something for us.
[Carter indicates for Jo to go ahead]
JO: Wood chips from the trees that fell.
LEONARDO: I'm actually kinda swamped. Lotto meristems aren't gonna reconfigure themselves, right?
CARTER: I was just thinking the same thing. But we'd love your help, just to make sure it wasn't caused by your department.
[Jo offers the samples to Leonardo, who takes them]
CARTER: Thank you.
LEONARDO: Mhmm. So, where are your uniforms?
CARTER: It's an unofficial visit.
LEONARDO: So, is it true that you guys got fired?
JO: He got fired, I, er, I quit.
LEONARDO: Bummer.
[As Carter signals his agreement, Leonardo puts down her tools and turns to face them]
CARTER: Thanks. So what' ya find out?
LEONARDO: I found out you're not the Sheriff. All GD research is classified. I can't talk about it to civilians. Sorry.
CARTER: Thank you.
LEONARDO: Yep.
EXT-ANTENNA DISH FIELD
[Carter pulls up to find Sheriff Andy with his hand in one of the electrical boxes beside a dish]
CARTER: Topping up the batteries?
[Sheriff Andy laughs]
SHERIFF ANDY: Good one! Actually, I'm running a diagnostic on the security system. There seems to be some trouble with the satellite communications.
CARTER: Well, when you're unplugged, I need you to talk to a Doctor Leonardo.
SHERIFF ANDY: Head dendrologist for GD?
[After a brief pause, Carter replies]
CARTER: Yeah. You're quick.
SHERIFF ANDY: Keep it all in the old hard drive up here.
[He points to his head]
SHERIFF ANDY C'TND: Did she say anything about all the trees that fell last night?
CARTER: Er, no. And it was the way she didn't say anything. It's tough to explain, man to robot.
SHERIFF ANDY: Jack...
CARTER: It's not an accident!
[Sheriff Andy removes his hand from the electrics. His hand sparks but he does not react]
SHERIFF ANDY: I appreciate all your help but I can't have you investigating. The town charter clearly delineates my duties as the Sheriff. You see where I'm coming from, right? Sheriff to...former-Sheriff.
CARTER: Sure.
[Carter stands up]
CARTER C'TND: No problem. Got a lot of packing to do.
[Carter starts towards his car]
SHERIFF ANDY: Thank you. Oh, and, Jack -- don't you worry. I am on top of this!
[Sheriff Andy laughs. A mere second later the gigantic antenna dish he was standing below collapses and severs him in half. As Carter turns to look back, all he sees are two legs sticking out -- he runs towards the accident]
INT-GLOBAL DYNAMICS
[Sheriff Andy is laid on a table in two pieces. Fargo, Carter, Allison and General Mansfield are standing around the table]
FARGO: Oh, this is really bad. They're never gonna let me test this top secret robot again.
MANSFIELD: Stop your whimpering son, patch him up.
CARTER: Err, I'm not a robot expert, but this looks like a dead one.
MANSFIELD: Mr Carter. This is a secure facility, one in which you are no longer permitted.
[Carter pulls aside his jacket to reveal a badge clipped to his shirt pocket]
CARTER: Oh, I'm just visiting. I'm paying my respects.
ALLISON: I don't think that Andy can be fixed.
MANSFIELD: This prototype was designed for durability. [to Fargo] I want him back on the street asap. Town needs a Sheriff.
[We see "yeah, we know" faces from Fargo, Allison and Carter as Mansfield leaves]
ALLISON: It's not just the trees; we now have a destroyed antenna dish.
CARTER: Yeah, somebody's gotta figure out what's happening.
ALLISON: Well, I don't think that Sheriff Andy is quite up to it at this moment.
CARTER: So. If someone was gonna investigate...err, Henry would be...?
ALLISON: Er, at the site. That would be a good place to start. Hypothetically.
CARTER: Hypothetically.
EXT-ANTENNA DISH FIELD
[Henry and Carter are stood next to the collapsed dish]
HENRY: This bolt was sheared off prior to the dish hitting Andy. It's made of tungsten carbide. It holds twenty-nine tones.
[Henry is holding a piece of sheared metal in his hand. We see Carter as he processes this information]
CARTER: Okay, so how does a radio dish snap it like a bread stick and then crush Andy?
HENRY: Well, it doesn't do either. I mean, here, look...
[Henry hands Carter the scrap of metal and then proceeds to lift the entire dish up with his bare hands, to the laughs of Carter]
CARTER: Someone's been working out!
HENRY: This is beryllium composite. Very lightweight. I mean, something must have ripped it off the tower and slammed it onto the ground.
[Henry puts the dish back down, with some help from Carter]
CARTER: Like wind?
HENRY: No... We're talking about tremendous force. I mean, equal to a hundred class five tornadoes.
CARTER: That's gotta be the same thing that knocked down those trees. Lemme know if you find out anything else.
[Carter hands the scrap back to Henry]
HENRY: Sure.
[Carter starts towards his car]
HENRY C'TND: Can't stay away from a good case, huh?
[Carter stops and looks back]
CARTER: I'm just naturally curious.
[Henry nods to Carter's smile and off he goes]
EXT-ROAD
[Carter is walking along the debris field when he spots Doctor Leonardo scanning the ground whilst talking on her cell phone]
CARTER: So a tree falls...in the erm...
LEONARDO: [on phone] Gotta go.
[Leonardo hangs up]
CARTER: Hi. So whatta you doing here? Thought you said this didn't have anything to do with your research...?
LEONARDO: I said I can't talk to you and I still can't.
CARTER: But you want to. I mean, you want to tell your side of the story, right? Explain why your stuff's here...
[Sheriff Andy suddenly appears from behind Leonardo's truck -- he is fixed]
LEONARDO: I'm sorry but you're not the Sheriff anymore.
SHERIFF ANDY: Right! I am. And I'm very interested to know why you're here.
CARTER: You're okay?
SHERIFF ANDY: Oh, one hundred and ten percent. The guy with the glasses...
[Sheriff Andy points to Carter for help with the name]
CARTER: Er, Fargo.
SHERIFF ANDY: Diego, he fixed me all up. Except for a little hiccup in the names database. Now, are you willing to cooperate Doctor Leotardo?
CARTER: Nardo. Leonardo.
SHERIFF ANDY: Thank you, Steve.
CARTER: Jack.
SHERIFF ANDY: [to Leonardo] Doctor Zhivago.
CARTER: Er, why are you here?
LEONARDO: Growing trees. I just...I needed more space for my experiments.
SHERIFF ANDY: This is public land. You do realize that it's illegal to do research on public land, don't you, Doctor?
LEONARDO: Yes! But I'm doing this for the public. I grew this entire grove in nine hours. Do you know what lightweight, hydroscopic hardwood could do for the world?
CARTER: Yeah!!
[Sheriff Andy and Leonardo look at him]
CARTER: No.
LEONARDO: It could re-forest entire continents. End global warming.
CARTER: Until they all come crashing down!
LEONARDO: Yeah, but they shouldn't. That's what I'm saying; I don't know why the trees fell. My trees could stand up to a hurricane.
SHERIFF ANDY: She's right, Dave. Hydroscopic hardwood is incredibly tough.
CARTER: Yeah...it'd take a hundred class five tornadoes...
INT-CAFÉ DIEM
[Carter, Jo and Lexi are sharing a table. Vincent is handing a melon medley to Jo]
LEXI: Mmm, Vincent do you have any fig newtons?
VINCENT: Absolutely, coming right up.
[Henry appears]
CARTER: Hey, Henry, what did ya find out?
[Henry sits down next to Lexi]
HENRY: Err, no evidence of any force from the outside on the trees or on the antenna dishes. No molecular breaks, no zero energy scorching.
CARTER: So we have no idea what blew 'em down?
HENRY: No.
[Henry looks to Lexi and asks, with a point to her stomach, if he can feel her bump -- Lexi smiles happily in acceptance]
CARTER: Well, whatever knocked them down hit 'em...really hard. Those trees hit the ground like a ton of...trees...
[Jo giggles]
CARTER C'TND: I was there.
[Vincent arrives with a plate for Lexi]
VINCENT: Here's your fig newtons.
LEXI: Thank you very, very much.
VINCENT: You are very welcome.
[Vincent leaves]
CARTER: Weren't you off cookies?? Something about, er...ten pounds a day?
LEXI: Maybe the scale was off. I don't know, I'm ten pounds lighter than I was yesterday.
[Imagine a light bulb switching on above Carter's head]
CARTER: Henry... What if the...trees could get fatter like Lexi--
LEXI: Woah! Jack...
CARTER: No, I mean, what if they weren't blown down, what if they fell because they got heavy?
HENRY: Well, they didn't get fat, Jack, I mean--
[Henry looks at Lexi as she turns towards him with an unappreciative look. Henry waves an apology]
HENRY C'TND: --I-I weighed everything myself.
CARTER: Yeah, now. But what if they just got heavy when they fell...
HENRY: If an extremely lightweight object--
CARTER: Yeah, like a genetically retriggered tree--
HENRY: --experiences an increase in weight, the sudden change in stress could cause catastrophic failure.
JO: And it would fall down.
HENRY: But...terrestrial weight doesn't change. Gravity, for all intense and purposes, is a constant.
CARTER: Is it possible? Is it Eureka possible?
[Henry false starts a few sentences before deciding upon a final answer]
HENRY: Suppose so, yeah.
EXT-OUTSIDE SHERIFF'S OFFICE
[Sheriff Andy is just climbing into his Police vehicle as Carter jogs up to meet with him]
CARTER: Andy!
[Carter comes around to the window]
CARTER C'TND: Hey.
SHERIFF ANDY: What's up?
CARTER: I think we've been experience is, er...random acts of gravity.
SHERIFF ANDY: I'm still a little foggy but that sounds nuts.
CARTER: Yes, it is. But it does explain the antenna and the trees. Now, what we have to do is track down any other incidents and find out what's causing this before somebody gets hurt.
SHERRIF ANDY: Alright, I'll look into it but I can only go where the evidence takes me.
CARTER: Great, thanks.
SHERIFF ANDY: Anything for you, Bob.
[Sheriff Andy gives Carter a thumbs up out the window as he walks away. Suddenly the car is crushed thin. We see Sheriff Andy's arm, still offering Carter the thumbs up, sticking out from the crushed wreckage. Carter looks at the disaster]
SHERIFF ANDY: [wheezy] I'm okay...
INT-GLOBAL DYNAMICS WAREHOUSE
CARTER: Wait!! Sorry I'm late.
[Carter comes sprinting down a metal staircase inside a dark warehouse]
CARTER: I didn't know GD had a warehouse. So...
[Carter reaches the bottom, where he finds Allison and Henry]
CARTER C'TND: How's Andy?
ALLISON: Fargo's working on him. So, er, Henry, why--
HENRY: Just a few minutes more. I'm tracking something here and you need to see it.
[Carter turns to Allison and they have their own little conversation whilst they wait on Henry finishing his observations]
CARTER: So, er, first the radar dish, now his car gets stomped.
ALLISON: Yeah, Andy's had some bad luck.
CARTER: Yeah, I think it might be more than bad luck.
[At this moment, Henry's observations are complete]
HENRY: Alright, who remembers their M Theory physics?
[Carter holds his look at Henry for a few seconds until he finally turns to Allison, who looked up jokingly at him following Henry's statement]
CARTER: I'll let you take this one.
ALLISON: Gravity is made up of mass-less particles which are distributed equally across the gravitational field.
HENRY: Correct, but my CMS scans indicate that right now those gravitons are actually coalescing.
ALLISON: Wai-er-are you talking about gravity wells?
CARTER: What's a gravity well?
[Allison goes to answer but Henry butts in]
HENRY: It is an area of intense super-gravity caused by the momentary concentration of gravitons.
ALLISON: And they don't exist.
HENRY: Okay, you know what? Stand back. And watch.
[Henry picks up a feather from his desk and gentle blows it off his hand. For a couple of seconds, it hovers as any feather would, and then suddenly, to the amazement of Carter and Allison, it slams down crashing through the floor]
CARTER: Woah!!
HENRY: Now, that's just for a moment before the gravitons dissipate, and my scans indicate that these gravity wells are starting to form all over Eureka.
INT-CAFÉ DIEM
[Carter is sat with Sheriff Andy, Allison and Jo]
CARTER: Well, gravity wells are one thing but I just think that someone is intentionally targeting Sheriff Andy.
Please note: translations on this page were done using Google Translator based upon the English translation given by Allison Blake (Salli Richardson-Whitfield). We are aware that in many circumstances, the translations are inaccurate of what Sheriff Andy (Ty Olsson) actually sounds like he is saying.
SHERIFF ANDY: Denk je echt dat ik werd vermoord?
ALLISON: Do you really think that I was murdered?
[To the confused look from Carter, Allison explains]
ALLISON C'TND: It's Dutch. Fargo's still repairing his speech circuits.
CARTER: You speak Dutch?
ALLISON: Carter, you said murder...
CARTER: Right, yes, erm...so we've got these-these-these gravity wells popping up all over town.
JO: There have been reports of sink holes, downed power lines, fallen fences.
ALLISON: Well, maybe we should start thinking about evacuation?
CARTER: Maybe not. No one has been injured, except Andy. And he's been flattened twice. I think someone is targeting him.
ALLISON: Well you know what Mansfield would say -- he would say "well of course you want it to be murder because then you'd have to investigate it."
CARTER: I've got a great job. I got a nice office. I got a--normal gravity.
SHERIFF ANDY: Nou, ik kwam naar de stad. Waarom zou iemand willen vermoorden mij?
ALLISON: Yeah, well I just came to town. Why would someone want to murder me?
CARTER: Well, I would, I mean, if I wanted my job back.
[Carter says this very casually]
ALLISON: Me too.
JO: I wouldn't mind seeing you dead. No offence.
SHERIFF ANDY: Geen genomen.
ALLISON: None taken.
CARTER: So what would it take for someone to steer a gravity well?
ALLISON: Well, you'd have to calibrate a tensor field specifically to repulse gravitons which no one has ever done, not even come close.
[Wait, hold on...isn't that what Doctor Fielding was using with Lexi? If it existed, that light bulb above Carter's head would be on once again]
CARTER: They might be closer than you think...
INT-FIELDING'S LAB
[Carter, Henry, Allison and Sheriff Andy are confronting Fielding in his lab, as he experiments with his birthing chamber]
CARTER: See, a baby aquarium's just a bad idea.
HENRY: Doctor Fielding, the gravity disturbances that have been occurring in and around Eureka are caused by a compact tensor field.
ALLISON: Exactly the kinda field created in your birthing chamber.
FIELDING: Interesting.
CARTER: Interesting?
HENRY: I know you only intended to create a small contained field but you've stumbled on a way to actually control gravitons...to manipulate the gravitational field.
[Fielding seems quite happy with himself]
ALLISON: Doctor Fielding, it is an incredible breakthrough, astonishing - but it is out of control.
FIELDING: Well, my apologies. I suppose if being an accidental genius is a crime, then: guilty. I am sorry if I caused any problems.
CARTER: You crushed Sheriff Andy!
FIELDING: What are you talking about?
CARTER: Your gravity wells - they crushed him!
SHERIFF ANDY: Tweemaal.
[Sheriff Andy symbolizes this with his fingers. Carter understands this one]
CARTER: Twice. And I don't think it was an accident.
FIELDING: Oh, that's insane. I had no idea what my field was doing. And, if I wanted to crush a Sheriff, it wouldn't be him.
HENRY: You know what, we need to stop the gravity wells before the whole town is crushed.
ALLISON: Look, Henry, I need you to put a team together at GD. Our best people. I don't care what projects they're working on, this is their only priority.
HENRY: Great, thanks.
[Henry leaves]
ALLISON: Carter, bring the good doctor back to GD.
CARTER: Done.
FIELDING: I have a lab to tend to.
ALLISON: Well, your lab will have to tend to itself. However unintentional, your tensor field is responsible for this problem. And right now, you're our best option for a solution.
FIELDING: Right. I'll stay here. We'll start untangling the issues immediately.
CARTER: We who?
FIELDING: I! And I'll surely let you know as soon as I make any progress.
ALLISON: You'll have all our resources behind you. Including sole use of the groviscular particle accelerator.
FIELDING: The GPA...
[Allison nods]
FIELDING C'TND: Let me gather my notes.
INT-GPA LAB
[Henry is at a console with Allison and Fielding stood over him. Fielding is giving orders out]
ANNOUNCER (O.S.): Sixty seconds until accelerator ignition.
FIELDING: Alright, we stabilized the gravity fields and we stabilized the doubt. [to Henry] You, set the spin for two and the electric charge for zero.
HENRY: And...
[Fielding gives a "and what?" look at Henry]
HENRY C'TND: Mean lifetime...?
FIELDING: Stable.
HENRY: Setting for "stable."
[Fielding walks away]
ALLISON: The particle beam should fix the gravity disturbances?
HENRY: It's dicey. If his settings are inaccurate...
ALLISON: Well he's the only person in the world who has successfully manipulated gravity.
HENRY: Accidentally!
ALLISON: He's the closest thing we have to an expert.
ANNOUNCER (O.S.): Ten seconds until accelerator ignition.
[The accelerator starts to wurr as it prepares to fire]
FIELDING: Take your positions.
[We see several scientists pushing buttons and then--]
ANNOUNCER (O.S.): Ignition.
HENRY: Passing one teravolt. [brief pause] Six teravolts. [brief pause] We're getting graviton blowback. It's tearing the fields apart!
[Everything shakes, through Global]
HENRY C'TND: Field is destabilizing.
FIELDING: It'll be...fine.
[His own words fail to convince him]
HENRY: We need a vector for retrieval. [nothing] Doctor Fielding! We need to shut this down right now!
[It is quite clear by his facial expression that Fielding has no clue what to do. Allison takes charge, shoving past Fielding]
ALLISON: Move!
[She runs across to the emergency shutdown, grabs a fire extinguisher and smashes the glass. She then pushes the button and pulls the lever down. She comes back across to view Henry's monitors as the accelerator shuts down]
HENRY: Emergency shutdown engaged. The particle beams are stabilizing.
[Henry turns to look at Fielding, as does Allison. Fielding looks terrified]
INT-ALLISON'S OFFICE
[Allison, Fielding, Henry and Carter are in her office]
ALLISON: Do you know what happens when you stop an accelerator in mid-cycle?
CARTER: Jo says we've got reports of dozens of buildings collapsing.
ALLISON: It's gonna take ten months to repair -- we have gravity wells developing all over town!
HENRY: The particle beam further destabilized the gravitational field.
CARTER: He made it worse!?
HENRY: Yes.
FIELDING: I'm soooo sorry.
HENRY: Sorry will not help solve the problem! We need to analyze your initial tensor field design. Now, what were your LEP positions?
[Henry opens his notebook and readies a pen]
ALLISON: Doctor Fielding, it's a basic question.
[He pauses]
FIELDING: Right...
CARTER: He doesn't know the basics...
ALLISON: What? Of course he does, he built the tensor field that started this problem.
CARTER: Not on his own, he didn't. I'm betting he doesn't even understand his own machine. So, what, you're a--you're taking credit but you had help? I'm guessing from somebody who'd want to hurt the new Sheriff..?
FIELDING: No! Marguerite would never harm anyone.
CARTER: Marguerite?
ALLISON: Someone at GD?
FIELDING: Doctor Marguerite von Deeter. She's a researcher at the University of Bonn. Brilliant woman. We never actually met. See--see, we found each other in an academic chat room. My research was...going nowhere, she steered me in the right direction. Just seeing her name in my inbox would make my heart...pound.
[Henry's had enough of this]
HENRY: Oh, please.
[Henry leaves as Fielding sighs in joy]
INT-GLOBAL CORRIDOR
[Allison and Carter are walking along a corridor shortly after the conversation with Fielding]
CARTER: Is that possible; they could work together without ever meeting?
ALLISON: Well, it's common. You never know where you're gonna find another specialist in your field. But what possible reason could this woman have to get rid of Andy?
CARTER: Oh, I called University Authorities in Germany -- er, used your phone--
ALLISON: Carter...
CARTER: --because Eureka's not paying for my calls anymore. And, er, they've never even heard of Marguerite von Deeter.
[As they walk down a few steps, Allison spots Andy]
ALLISON: Oh, Andy, I thought you were supposed to be with Fargo getting your memory circuit checked?
SHERIFF ANDY: Carter had hut ner dicht.
CARTER: I had him check Fielding's e-mail first. What did ya find?
SHERIFF ANDY: Deetacht unique glock glinden.
[Sheriff Andy hands Allison a console and she passes it to Carter]
ALLISON: Er, you're not gonna like it. Good luck in getting her to admit it.
INT-SARAH
[Zoe is folding and packing clothes ready to leave whilst complaining to SARAH]
ZOE: I'm supposed to be happy about this? I mean, he gets this great new job, and what do I get? The shaft.
[We briefly here the door open]
SARAH: I'm sure your father considered your best interests when making his decision.
ZOE: Sure he didn't.
[As the camera pans around we see Carter walking up behind Zoe. She is unaware and SARAH says nothing]
SARAH: All human decisions are subject to reversal. At this time, I estimate a twenty-seven percent chance that your family will remain in Eureka. Hello, Sheriff Carter.
[He stops just behind Zoe and leans against a column]
CARTER: Zoe. We need to talk.
ZOE: Yeah, whatever.
[Zoe walks around to the other side of the kitchen, and Carter walks up to the counter - where he places his jacket]
CARTER: Look, I know that you're upset I have to leave Eureka. But this has gone way-too-far.
ZOE: What has?
CARTER: I know about the e-mails you sent Doctor Fielding.
ZOE: What e-mails?
CARTER: We traced them. You sent them from here. And I know about the online research you did on gravity.
ZOE: Okay, I don't do gravity research online, I shop.
CARTER: This is serious. We know that you tried to...kill Sheriff Andy.
ZOE: What are you talking about?
CARTER: Zoe, it's over.
ZOE: Dad!!
SARAH: Wait!!
CARTER: Sarah, mind your own business - this has to do with Zoe and me.
SARAH: No, Sheriff Carter, I'm afraid it doesn't. I'm deeply involved; I'm responsible for everything that's happened.
[A smile comes across Carter's face. Was this his plan?]
SARAH C'TND: It was me.
ZOE: Okay...what is going on?
CARTER: Thank you.
[Zoe looks confused, and then Carter turns his attention to SARAH]
CARTER C'TND: I thought so. Sarah is Marguerite von Deeter. Isn't that right, Sarah?
SARAH: Ya.
ZOE: Okay, you're both insane. And who is Marguerite von Deeter?
EXT-MAIN STREET
[Traffic is held up. We see Lupo walking along on her cell phone]
JO: Hey, er, Carter. Yeah, there's a tiny bit of trouble with the traffic light on Main Street.
[We then see the traffic light...buried up to it's amber light in the middle of the concrete road]
CARTER: (O.S.): Why, what's wrong?
JO: Now it's kinda in Main Street.
CARTER: (O.S.): Alright, we're working as fast as we can, thanks.
JO: Yeah...
INT-SARAH
[Carter and Zoe are walking through the kitchen area towards a table where Henry is sat]
ZOE: So, you knew I didn't do it; you just used me to get Sarah to confess?
CARTER: Pretty much.
ZOE: Very deviant, I'm totally impressed.
CARTER: Thank you.
SARAH: Doctor Fielding's tensor field was quite primitive. He was unable to see the potential.
HENRY: But you did.
SARAH: I was able to expand on his breakthrough by cross-referencing the Global Dynamics mainframe with a number of recently developed theoretical models.
CARTER: Which you then used to squish Sheriff Andy!?
SARAH: I apologize. I let my artificial emotions get the best of me.
ZOE: She was desperate; she didn't want us to leave her here alone.
[Henry pushes across a handheld console to Carter]
HENRY: Er, Fargo sent the new scan results.
[Carter looks closely]
CARTER: Well, that doesn't look good.
HENRY: Yeah, the gravitational wells are coming together into a single massive event. If that happens, they will suck in any matter that comes close.
ZOE: What, like a black hole?
HENRY: Mmm.
ZOE: Sarah, what did you do!?
CARTER: We gotta move this someplace where there's no people.
SARAH: I no longer have graviton guidance. Doctor Fielding's misguided attempt at a solution made the problem grow far beyond my control.
CARTER: Alright, then its evacuation.
HENRY: No, I'm afraid that if these wells come together into a singularity, then evacuation won't help -- the entire west coast will be in danger.
CARTER: Oh, well how about another shot from your, er, erm...accelerator...thingy?
HENRY: The field is too strong. It's like shooting a bullet at an asteroid.
CARTER: Well, if a bullet won't work, how about a bomb?
SARAH: That is an interesting metaphor. A graviton pulse explosion could return gravity to normal.
HENRY: Fielding's birthing chamber!
ZOE: Well, you know that if you overloaded the tensor field, it could make a wicked gravity bomb.
SARAH: It would require a substantial external power source.
CARTER: [to Henry] Alright, you and I get some batteries, we go to Fielding's lab, problem solved.
[Henry looks at the console again and Carter and Zoe lean in]
HENRY: Er, except the scan indicates that the singularities are forming on top of Fielding's lab. That's where the gravitational disruption began.
SARAH: The gravity fluctuations will be very intense.
CARTER: How intense?
HENRY: Birds will be hitting the ground like cannon balls. What we need is, erm, someone more durable.
[Suggesting Sheriff Andy, of course]
INT-GLOBAL LAB
[Fargo is working on Sheriff Andy, who is sat on a table with Allison, Carter and General Mansfield observing]
FARGO: I just got him speaking English again, and now you want to throw him into a giant trash compactor?
ALLISON: He needs to connect the power supply then detonate the chamber.
CARTER: It's gonna be dangerous, Andy. I won't lie to ya.
MANSFIELD: This is the perfect testing scenario for our technology. Get him ready.
[We see a brief sign of worry on Sheriff Andy's face]
SHERIFF ANDY: No. I can't go.
MANSFIELD: Excuse me?
ALLISON: Andy, we need you to do this.
MANSFIELD: For God's sake, he's a machine - he can't refuse!
[Sheriff Andy jumps down from the table and turns to face Mansfield]
SHERIFF ANDY: According to the town charter, the Sheriff is to protect the citizenry of Eureka, while avoiding unreasonable personal danger. In this case, my odds of survival would be around seven percent. I gotta say no. I'm really sorry.
MANSFIELD: This is an order!
SHERIFF ANDY: I'm really sorry.
ALLISON: Well, we have to do something. Fargo - what about a drone?
FARGO: Well, we'd have to compensate for the change in the gravitational field but that would take about twelve hours.
MANSFIELD: We don't have twelve hours.
CARTER: I'll go.
[Everyone looks at him like he's nuts!]
ALLISON: What, no! Carter - Andy is right, not with the odds at seven percent.
CARTER: Well, around here, that's pretty good.
EXT-ROAD NEAR FIELDING'S LAB
[Carter is in the police vehicle whilst Henry prepares it for the trip. Sheriff Andy and Allison are present]
HENRY: I've hotwired Fielding's tensor generator to the engine. The repulsive field should give you some protection against the super gravity.
CARTER: Alright, what happens when I get out of the car?
HENRY: You're on your own.
CARTER: Oh.
[They laugh]
HENRY: That's the power supply.
[He points at a box in the passenger seat]
CARTER: Alright, so attach it to the chamber, set the timer...
ALLISON: Then run.
CARTER: Forgot that part...
[Carter starts up the engine and drives off]
ALLISON: You're tracking the gravitational field?
SHERIFF ANDY: Yes, ma'am. Fargo has temporarily replaced my night vision with magnetic sensors.
ALLISON: If he doesn't stop the singularity, we'll have to evacuate.
SHERIFF ANDY: Doctor Blake, why is he doing this? It's not his job...
ALLISON: It's who he is.
EXT-INSIDE CARTER'S POLICE VEHICLE
[Jack is on his way, with a headset on]
HENRY (O.S.): Jack, you should be reaching the edge of the gravity disturbance.
CARTER: Erm...
[He checks his consoles]
CARTER C'TND: Nothing yet.
[Just a second later, the monitors start to bleep]
CARTER C'TND: Wait...
[BANG! Pine cones start hitting the roof of the vehicle, to the point where large craters bulge into the cockpit]
CARTER C'TND: Oh crap!!
HENRY (O.S.): What?
CARTER: Erm, pine cones. They sound like anvils.
HENRY (O.S.): Probably weigh as much.
[SMASH! One hits the windscreen putting a massive crack down it in front of Carter]
EXT-ROAD - CONTINUOUS
[We see Henry on the other end of the conversation]
HENRY: Jack, just drive, you don't have much time.
INT-FIELDING'S LAB
[Carter pulls up and runs in with the power supply]
CARTER: I'm at the barn! Pretty bad in here.
HENRY (O.S.): Trust me, it's gonna get worse.
[Carter strains to lift the power supply past his waist]
CARTER: Argh, my legs feel like they're two-hundred pounds.
EXT-ROAD - CONTINUOUS
HENRY: They probably are. Jack, you're near the edge of a gravity well. There's no way to predict where they'll be.
INT-FIELDING'S LAB
HENRY C'TND (O.S.): They're forming and dissipating all over the laboratory. Just hook in that power supply.
CARTER: Got it. Here goes nothing.
[Carter starts running through the lab, the power supply a real burden for him to carry as objects smash through the floor all around him. He stops, where it seems he has gone directly over a gravity well as the power supply seems to be getting heavier and heavier. Despite his best effort, it pulls from his grasp and plows straight through the floor. Carter drops to his knees]
CARTER C'TND: Err...little problem here.
EXT-ROAD
[A brief break in the episode fills where Carter explains what has just happened]
HENRY: Carter!? Are you sure the battery supply is gone?
INT-FIELDING'S LAB - CONTINUOUS
CARTER: Yeah.
EXT-ROAD - CONTINUOUS
HENRY: Well, we have to find another source of power.
INT-FIELDING'S LAB - CONTINOUS
CARTER: Little wrinkle, I can't move.
EXT-ROAD - CONTINOUS
HENRY: Well you're caught near a gravity well.
INT-FIELDING'S LAB - CONTINOUS
HENRY C'TND (O.S.): Just see if you can slide a few inches in the right direction and you might be free.
CARTER: Alright.
[Carter tries to move, but fails to move even a millimeter]
CARTER C'TND: Yeah, there's no sliding.
[Sheriff Andy appears at the doorway]
SHERIFF ANDY: Hey there!
[We see what he sees - we can clearly see two gravity wells near Carter]
SHERIFF ANDY C'TND: Need a hand?
CARTER: Thought you didn't like the odds?
SHERIFF ANDY: Well, I re-ran the analysis. Seems the odds are always a little better when you're around.
CARTER: Oh yeah, I'm full of luck.
[Sheriff Andy makes his way towards Carter, dodging falling debris]
CARTER C'TND: Careful!
SHERIFF ANDY: Its okay, Fargo replaced my sensor. I can read the gravity wells as they're forming.
[He reaches Carter and pulls him up]
SHERIFF ANDY C'TND: Where's the power supply?
[We see a torn wire sparking. It is huge]
CARTER: What about that?
SHERIFF ANDY: That's not gonna be enough power.
CARTER: It might be...
SHERIFF ANDY: We need ten times household current.
CARTER: I'm always giving Fielding these citations for tapping too much power from the grid. It might be.
SHERIFF ANDY: Alright, let's check it out. You follow me.
[Sheriff Andy starts maneuvering his way towards the wire. When he picks it up he senses the power]
SHERIFF ANDY C'TND: You were right; this is way over household current. This is definitely a citation! But it is not enough.
CARTER: Alright, we gotta boost it with something.
SHERIFF ANDY: Yeah. Me.
CARTER: Will that fry you?
SHERIFF ANDY: Nahh. Well, yeah, maybe. Running the power through me could be just enough to overload the field. Sure ain't gonna be fun but we don't have a lot of choices right now. Or time. Alright. We only have a millisecond or two before this thing overloads. So you need to activate the field at the exact same moment.
CARTER: Ready?
[They ready themselves. Sheriff Andy nods]
CARTER: One...two...three...
[Sheriff Andy puts his hand on where a wire should connect and Carter hits a big button at precisely the same moment. Carter pulls his hand away to watch Sheriff Andy react to the current, and then boom! A pulse bursts out, throwing them both back across the lab. They land on the floor]
EXT-ROAD - CONTINUOUS
HENRY: Carter!?
INT-FIELDING'S LAB - CONTINUOUS
[Carter wakes up]
HENRY C'TND (O.S.): Carter!? [no response] Carter!!??
CARTER: Hey, Sheriff...you with me?
[Nothing. Andy is out]
CARTER C'TND: Andy...?
[Suddenly the robotics wurr into action and he wakes up]
SHERIFF ANDY: Ooouuuccchhh!
[Sigh of relief from Carter]
SHERIFF ANDY C'TND: I don't like this job.
CARTER: [to Henry] We're here. We're okay.
EXT-ROAD - CONTINOUS
[Relief is on both Allison and Henry's faces]
HENRY: Alright.
INT-FIELDING'S LAB - CONTINOUS
[Carter and Sheriff Andy sit up, then slowly get to their feet and then leave]
EXT-MAIN STREET
[Carter and Zoe are walking along towards Carter's leaving party at Café Diem]
CARTER: I don't wanna go to this.
ZOE: You kinda have to, it's your party.
CARTER: You know, you could stay here.
ZOE: Right...
CARTER: No, I'm serious. And I'm okay with it. I think that you're old enough...and I think that this town is your home.
ZOE: No, it's not. You are.
[Carter smiles and nods]
CARTER: Okay.
[Allison appears from inside Café Diem]
ALLISON: Okay, can't keep a pregnant woman inside with a cake this long.
[They all laugh]
ZOE: He's being a party-pooper.
CARTER: Well, it's just weird. I mean, you get fired and then all everybody wants to do is tell ya how much they're gonna miss you...
ALLISON: A lot! I'm gonna miss you a lot.
[Lexi and Henry arrive]
LEXI: Hey! Did we miss the big entrance?
CARTER: Noooo, I'm stalling.
HENRY: Oh, good. Well, because I have a present for you. Did you know that in Eureka, the Department of Defense has the authority to fire any local peace officer, including the Sheriff?
CARTER: Thanks, yeah I did.
HENRY: But...only with the approval of the mayor. Written approval.
[Carter realizes. Woo!]
ALLISON: Is that true, Henry?
HENRY: That would be...Mayor Deacon!
ZOE: Wait, so can my Dad have his job back?
HENRY: No!! He never lost it in the first place.
LEXI: Hah! See, I told you we weren't going anywhere.
CARTER: Ho--where is this written?
HENRY: Town Charter.
ALLISON: Henry, the Town Charter is a hundred and seventy-four volumes.
HENRY: Well, you see, I had a little help from our my friend. Er, he had it all in his hard drive.
[Sheriff Andy appears behind Lexi and taps on his forehead]
ZOE: So I think it's time for a party.
HENRY: Sounds good to me.
CARTER: Yeah...I'm gonna meet you guys inside.
HENRY: Mmm-hmm.
[Henry and the girls head inside and Sheriff Andy walks up to Carter]
CARTER: You okay?
SHERIFF ANDY: All patched up.
CARTER: Henry just told me what you did, so...thank you.
SHERIFF ANDY: You're welcome.
CARTER: You know, Eureka owes you one. You did a good job; you're a good Sheriff.
SHERIFF ANDY: With some severe limitations. An honest assessment of myself leads me to the conclusion that I am just...not built for this job.
CARTER: Aren't you? Actually...?
[Sheriff Andy laughs]
SHERIFF ANDY: Well, not like you. Everyone has a choice, right? Well, I think I choose something else.
[Sheriff Andy offers Carter's badge back to him, which he accepts]
CARTER: Are you sure?
SHERIFF ANDY: It's a smart move. Odds are better with you around.
CARTER: Well, do you want to come to the party?
SHERIFF ANDY: I think I need to spend a little time in my box. You know, sort things out.
CARTER: Sure.
SHERIFF ANDY: It was real nice working with ya. Sheriff.
[They exchange a handshake]
CARTER: Thanks, Andy.
[One final "Sheriff Andy nod" and he walks past Carter, who turns to watch him off. And, with a smile on his face, Carter walks into Café Diem to a round of applause]
INT-CAFÉ DIEM - LATER, NIGHT
[Henry is speaking to someone at the door as a waiter removes plates from behind Allison, who is sat in the cozy area]
HENRY: Hey, thanks for coming to the party!
[Henry walks over to Allison]
HENRY C'TND: What's this?
ALLISON: Mmm, privileges of pregnancy.
HENRY: Ahha.
ALLISON: So, thank you. For keeping him around.
HENRY: Oh, you're welcome. Besides, I think that you're gonna need all the help that you can get. We've been having trouble with our nav. sat. antenna array.
ALLISON: Yes, some kind of interference. We couldn't pin it down before the array was destroyed.
HENRY: Yeah, I ran the output - it wasn't interference, it was a radio signal.
ALLISON: Man made...
HENRY: No, I mean, we don't have anything out that far.
ALLISON: Henry, what are you saying?
HENRY: I'm saying that there's something out there and it's heading straight for us. Straight for Eureka.
EXT-MAIN STREET
[Carter walks out of the Sheriff's office as Fargo walks past]
FARGO: Morning, Sheriff.
CARTER: Morning.
[Jo is close behind Fargo and meets up with Carter]
CARTER: Deputy Lupo.
JO: Sheriff Carter. I'm just staying because I hate job interviews. "What would you consider your greatest weakness?" What kind of dumb-ass question is that, seriously?
CARTER: It's gonna happen for you, Jo. It will.
JO: I really don't care.
CARTER: Yeah, you do. And you're gonna be a great Sheriff.
JO: Damn skippy I will.
[They walk across the road towards Café Diem. The camera doesn't follow]
CARTER: Damn skippy.
[Jo laughs, Carter joins in]
